Farewell Room 9

As many of you know, I (Miss Donnelly) am re-locating to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This Room 9 blog will no longer be added to, but will hopefully stay on-line until the end of the year. I'm sure a new blog will be started up for Terms 3 and 4.
My warmest thanks to all the faithful blog readers- parents, children, grandparents, friends etc. Room 9 have loved sharing all that we have been up to!
To all the Room 9 children: stay good! And keep being yourselves.

Logging off now,
Miss Donnelly

World Environment Day

For World Environment Day last Thursday Room 9 joined with their buddy class, Room 24, for a beach and park clean up. It turned out that the beach and park were already quite tidy (Eastbourne residents must be tidy kiwis!) however we did manage to fill a couple of rubbish bags.

In the afternoon, some Year 3 and 4 students helped Ted move some agapantha plants. These plants were no longer needed in another part of the school so we thought it a good idea to re-plant them instead of throwing them out. They are now lining the fence where the memorial gate is.

More Masterpieces

I'm sure you will agree that the standard of artwork that Room 9 children are producing is just amazing! The Year 3 and 4 team had an 'Art Attack' day last week so we could really get stuck in to some fantastic painting. These are what we ended up with! We studied Monet's famous 'Sailboats' paintings and used these as inspiration for ours.
We were focusing on:
- blending colours on the page rather than mixing up the colour beforehand.
-blending with white to create different tints of a colour
-trying to show the hazy reflection of the boats and trees in the water.

Here are Monet's paintings

Feel free to pop in and have a closer look at our paintings in the classroom.

These are our paintings:

Island Bay Marine Education Centre

This term the Year 3 and 4 Inquiry is on the Rocky Shore. Our big idea is that "We have the power to protect and preserve our local environment- the Rocky Shore".
As part of our 'Immersion' stage we had some hands on experience.

A couple of weeks ago Years 3 and 4 went on a trip out to Island Bay to the Marine Education Centre.

We had a fantastic time and learned so much about the Rocky Shore and the creatures that live there. We even got to hold many of the creatures.
(You may have noticed Miss Donnelly wasn't too keen on that!)

"Lest We Forget"

For the last 2 weeks the Year 3 and 4 team have been learning about ANZAC's and why we remember them on ANZAC Day. We have read many incredible stories about brave and courageous ANZAC soldiers. We have even heard some stories from Room 9 students who have had relatives who fought in the war.

Today we baked some ANZAC biscuits. As you can see, we had a great time making them and of course EATING THEM!

A big thankyou to the official event photographers: Sally, Ciaran and Harry.

Super Sammies!

BubbleShare: Share photos - Play some Online Games.

Today we had our Super Sammie Day! We had to create the 'Super Sammie' that we planned during class time. During our unit on 'How We Learn' we have found out about how to have healthy bodies. Eating a balanced diet is part of having a healthy body, so we designed these healthy sandwiches that used ingredients from all sections of the food pyramid.

"My sandwich has items from the food pyramid. Mostly fruits and veges (carrots and tomatoes); breads (french stick); some protein (salami) and a tiny bit of fat (margarine)" - Amy O

"I used have chili, carrot, tomatoes and lettuce which is from the vegetable part of the food pyramid. White bread and bread rolls are from the breads. Cheese, eggs and beans are from the protein group. It is healthy because I haven't got fats and oils." -Margarita

A special visitor

Today we had a very special visitor come into our classroom. Rhys has a gorgeous little puppy called 'Sarge' that came in to say hello after morning tea. Sarge seemed to love being in our classroom and definitely made himself at home. Rhys talked to us about looking after Sarge, and also showed us on the world map where Sarge's birth place is- Timaru. Even though Miss Donnelly is not a big fan of dogs, she had to admit that Sarge was 'a bit of a cutie'.

Swan Plants

BubbleShare: Share photos - Play some Online Games.

Russell came into our class this morning to talk to us about the swan plants that we planted last year. Everyone in our class had a chance to stand up and report back about how their swan plant is growing.
Swan plants are the only plants that monarch butterflies can grow on. There is a special milk inside the leaves that monarch caterpillers eat. This is the only food that they can eat.

If we want more beautiful monarch butterflies in Eastbourne, we have to grow more swan plants! The seed pods that grow on the plants will eventually land in the soil and grow a new plant.

Sally- "Agie (the rabbit)ate the stalk during the night" That was the end of Sally's swan plant!

Bridie- "My swan plant is up to my chin, but no butterflies on it."

Harry- "Mine is up to my tummy-button and two butterflies have hatched."

Ciaran- "25 butterflies have hatched from mine"

Gabriella- "35 butterflies have hatched from mine"

Billy- "Mine had 3 seed pods on it, it was up to my chin, then my sister broke it. But it is still living, just much smaller."

New Orphans of Nepal Wiki!

Exciting! If you look on the right hand side column you will see an Orphans of Nepal link. There is now an Orphans of Nepal wiki where you can find out information about Brighter Future Children's home and Shining Stars Children's Home. The children in these homes are special friends of Muritai students. We keep in touch through pictures, letters and photos. With the help of one of their volunteers, BFCH have even made us a DVD about their life in Nepal!
Muritai School often have fundraisers to help raise funds for the orphans.

Term 1

Wow, we are nearly at the end of week 2! Our classroom is already starting to brighten up with fabulous art and other work.

This term we have some exciting learning experiences coming up. Out major inquiry study this term is titled 'Howie Learn' and has a health and social studies focus. This topic will provide children with many opportunities to explore the different ways in which they learn. So far we have been looking at Howard Gardener's 'Multiple Intelligences' or 'Smarts' and identifying the areas of strength we each have.
We will also be looking at our 'learning switch-ons' and learning about keeping our bodies healthy by making balanced food choices.

Swimming (Week 1-6)
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 11am you will find us improving our swimming skills down at the Eastbourne swimming pool.

Writing

Our writing topic this term is recounts. Children will be structuring their writing by starting with an introduction, sequencing events chronologically, and finishing with a conclusion.

Mathematics
The major part of the term will be spent on numeration, addition and subtraction. Later this term we look at statistics.

Art
'Portraits' is our Art topic for this term. Children will be exploring a variety of portraiture techniques and experimenting with different tools including pencils, pastels and paint.

Homework
Children are expected to complete their homework each night, and return their homework book to school each morning. They will have 8-10 spelling words and basic facts to work on during the week.
